Saibai Island, Torres Strait, 1898

The British Library’s Alfred Cort Haddon 1898 Expedition (Torres Strait and British New Guinea) Cylinder Collection includes 140 wax cylinders recorded on the Torres Strait Islands and in British New Guinea as part of the 1898 Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to Torres Straits. This cylinder collection constitutes the earliest collection of sound recordings in the Library’s Sound Archive.

Haddon, Seligmann and Ray arrived on Saibai Island on 22 October and left on 25 October 1898.

Following research using Ray’s journal, the dates for recording have been specified as 23 October and 24 October. Ray described working with Jack and recording cylinders on 23 and 24 October (1898-1899:90) and Haddon noted that on Monday 24 October, “Ray worked the phonograph & got some new records” (1898-1899:253).

There is no mention of specific recording locations in Haddon or Ray’s writings. They do describe a visit to a church on Saibai, which was possibly “Panetha” or its successor “Mari Yoewth” (Haddon 1898-1899:250; Ray 1898-1899:90).12016. Holy Trinity Church – History. This recording corresponds to Charles S. Myers' Saibai Song I. Words and translation published in Myers (1912:269). Myers has notations for two versions of Saibai, 1A and 1B (1912:263). It is not yet clear which recording corresponds to which version. The mawa ceremony of the Western islands is discussed in Haddon, Seligmann and Wilkin; ‘A similar custom occurred in Saibai, where it took place when the food in the gardens was ripe.’ (1904:348-349). The title could be 'Mauwau na puidam' (‘Mask song’) as given in Marriner (2009).		Reasonable quality recording but with weak signal and surface noise.
